Thrift Stores
“We exist solely on the donations and gifts we receive from individuals, churches and businesses. We receive no funding from the government, so we have to look at every possible opportunity for creating an income stream.
"We have been especially pleased with the thrift store concept because it not only generates income for us but performs a service for the community as well. We work very hard at being good stewards of every dollar and donated item given to us. And every dime that's taken in through our thrift stores goes to the bottom line of Palmer Home—to benefit the children God has entrusted to our care.
"When you give something to us you can know something good's going to happen with it."
Ed Waldron—President, Palmer Home for Children
Columbus, MS
The original idea for a thrift store came as a result of the overwhelming generosity of the people in Columbus and throughout Mississippi. Palmer Home had more items donated to us than we could use on campus for the children. Since we didn't want to waste the fruits of our donors' generosity, we decided to open a small thrift store on the Columbus campus with Gordon Via as manager, to sell some of the overflow. After a year, however, it became apparent that a larger building and different location was needed.
The move was made to a 6,000 square foot building off campus, where the store remained for two and a half years. But as the Lord blessed and the business flourished, it again became apparent that larger quarters were needed. Thus, in 2001 it was moved to a 20,000 square foot facility on College Street and, in 2005, it moved into an even larger building at 2608 Main Street across, from Propst Park. The Thrift Store offers customers great values on new and used furniture, new and used clothing, and numerous other items.

When Mike Montgomery joined Palmer Home in late 1999, we saw an opportunity to use the retail expertise he brought in a new thrift store venture. The Starkville Thrift Store was opened in 2000, with Mike as the Manager. Since then it has grown into a thriving business, requiring the move to it's present larger location at 422-B Highway 12 West, Starkville, MS. It offers similar values and the same great customer service as the Columbus Store.
